  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder

  • 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)
  • Fresh cilantro leaves for garnish

Cooking Methods for Kichri

Method 1: Stovetop Cooking

  1. Rinse the rice and lentils separately under cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. Heat ghee in a large pot over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  3. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  4. Add minced garlic and grated ginger. Sauté for another minute.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes soften.
  6. Add the rinsed onepot kichri and lentils to the pot. Stir well to coat them with the spices.
  7. Pour in 4 cups of water and bring it to a boil.
  8. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 20-25 minutes or until the rice and lentils are cooked and tender.
  9. Once cooked, fluff the bengali Kichri with a fork and garnish with fresh cilantro leaves before serving.

Method 2: Pressure Cooker

  1. Follow the steps 1 to 5 from the stovetop cooking method.
  2. Add the rinsed rice and lentils to the pressure cooker along with 4 cups of water.
  3. Close the lid and cook on high pressure for 5-6 whistles.
  4. Allow the pressure to release naturally before opening the cooker.
  5. Fluff the Kichri with a fork and garnish with fresh cilantro leaves.
