Michigan, Washington Order New Covid-19 Restrictions As U.S. Cases Surge Past 11 Million

TOPLINE Michigan and Washington state are the latest to announce sweeping new restrictions in a bid to contain an accelerating Covid-19 pandemic in the U.S., which has seen cases surge past 11 million—less than a week after passing the grim 10 million milestone—overwhelming hospitals and leading some states to declare a state of emergency.

KEY FACTS

On Sunday, Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer ordered restaurants to halt indoor dining, stop in-person teaching at high schools, colleges, and universities, suspend organized sports and severely limit indoor and outdoor social gatherings, saying that the Covid-19  “situation has never been more dire.”

The restrictions are set to last three weeks and will come into force Wednesday.

Whitmer imposed a stay-at-home order on Michigan in March and at the time urged the public to follow mask wearing and social distancing protocols to avoid a second one, adding: “We are at the precipice and we need to take some action.”

Washington governor Jay Inslee also announced a slew of restrictions in Washington Sunday, which are due to start on Monday and Tuesday, stressing that “inaction is not an option.”

Inslee’s measures include shuttering gyms and entertainment centers, restricting restaurants and bars to take-out or outdoor services, limiting the capacity of retail stores and banning indoor social gatherings.

KEY BACKGROUND

Despite President Donald Trump’s repeated assertions that the U.S. was “rounding the corner” of the pandemic, the situation is worsening at an accelerating rate. In less than a week, the U.S. has reported 1 million more infections. Contrary to the assertions of Trump and his allies, these numbers cannot be accounted for by an increase in testing alone, and experts like Dr. Deborah Birx, who coordinates the White House’s coronavirus task force, warn that the worst is yet to come. In the absence of federal leadership in this area, states are having to act themselves. In addition to Michigan and Washington, Utah has already declared a state of emergency and enacted a statewide mask mandate and North Dakota, whose governor has long resisted strict measures, announced a statewide mandate and restrictions Friday.
