‘Among Us’ May Finally Come To Macs—But Only Ones With Apple’s Custom-Made Chips
TOPLINE Among Us may finally come to MacOS, Apple announced Tuesday, but the massively popular game will only be available on the company's 2020 line of Mac computers, not older models.
KEY FACTS
Apple’s new line of MacBooks use custom-made ARM-based silicon chips, which allow iPhone and iPad apps to run directly on MacOS for the first time.
The game was previously only available for Apple users on iOS devices.
Apple featured Among Us during its “One More Thing” launch event, and the game is also displayed on Apple’s product pages for the MacBook Air and Pro—but neither InnerSloth, the developer of Among Us, nor Apple immediately responded to a request to confirm the news to Forbes.
KEY BACKGROUND
Among Us has become a massive hit this year, surpassing 60 million daily active users thanks in part to its popularity with Twitch streamers and YouTubers. The multiplayer party game reached a kind-of zenith when 700,000 people watched Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez last month stream Among Us on Twitch. Perfectly designed for playing with friends while staying at home, players are either designated as “crewmates” or “imposters.” Crewmates perform tasks around an alien spaceship while imposters try to sabotage the tasks and kill crewmates without getting caught.
SURPRISING FACT
The vast majority of Among Us players are on mobile devices, according to a chart tweeted out by InnerSloth developer Forest Willard in September.
